Humility is a strange thing ~
the minute you think you you’ve got it, you’ve lost it
E.D. Hulse
Do you ever ask yourself what it is that you really want from life? Is it financial abundance, success in a career, or a happy family? Maybe it’s more basic than that. Is it as simple as a reasonable level of health, and a manageable daily life? Even that does not always seem possible in this world. So what is it then? Perhaps something even more basic, like peace of mind?
No doubt I have wanted all of these things at one time or another. But over the years I have also developed a deep desire in my heart, and have held a steady intention in my mind. What I want more than anything is a greater understanding of reality; to come to know ever deeper levels of truth. I want to be filled with light and truth, and to be of great service to both the world and to Spirit. I am so grateful to have tasted enough of this light, this state of being, to realize that nothing offers more peace and joy!
But the human aspect of my being always tries to have its way. In my attempt to be of service, to do for others, I often try to do too much. I find myself exhausted, irritated, and in the end of no real help at all. I have to admit that at other times, when I believe I have accomplished a great deal, a smugness creeps into my mind and leaves me feeling ashamed. In either case, how can any act, no matter how signficant it may appear on the outside, be of true service if it is done with an attitude of indifference or arrogance?
As human beings we have a basic need to believe that we are valuable on some level. As we begin to wake up it is natural for this need to manifest as a sincere desire to be of service. As our awareness increases even more it becomes evident that it is not the level of doing that brings more light to our world, it is the awareness of our being. It is through an open and humble heart that the light of spirit shines. It is only honest humility that frees us from judgement, and allows us meet our fellow man face to face, heart to heart, and to be of real use to Source. Humility is not a fault that holds us in a state of weakness. It is a doorway to the power of love.
