The Call Home

It is human nature to be curious, and to seek greater understanding. Through our intellect we have the ability to ponder the great questions; who are we, why are we here, what is the meaning of life? Yet through all of humankind’s history, have we found any answers that truly satisfy? I suppose what answers we find depends on where we look for them. Yes, where to look? That in itself is a profound question, and deserves some attention.

We are born into a world that is ever changing. What we believe about the nature of life and about ourselves is in large part dictated by the state of the world, and the state of our little corner of it, at the time of our arrival. What are we told about life? Perhaps more importantly, what are we shown? This is the beginning of our understanding and our journey of discovery, but does it necessarily have to be the end?

We have a choice to make. Every day of our lives we choose whether to believe what we are told and to live accordingly, or to follow our natural curiosity, and to be brave enough to seek a deeper truth. We can choose to believe it is our social status, the amount of money in our bank accounts, or even our ethnicity that defines us. We can choose to see ourselves and others as either being among the favored ones or the disposable ones in life. We can choose to believe there is an “us” and a “them” in the world. We can also choose to believe this is just the natural order of things that can not be changed. It certainly seems simpler to accept the world’s apparent view of itself than to engage in earnest questioning.

But the outer world can only inform us of the opinions and beliefs of others. It cannot reveal the deeper truth that awaits discovery. It is within the core of our being that God dwells, waiting to meet us face to face; waiting to enlighten us with the unfathomable grandeur of reality. Do we dare risk the comfort of belief for the uncertainty of what is yet to be understood? In truth, we are all called to a higher knowing. We are all called home to our eternal selves, and to the center of Spirit that loved us into being. May we cherish the journey, and each other along the way.

Dare to Climb
